What is cotton?

Cotton comes from the cotton plant and is the most widely used natural fiber worldwide. There are several different varieties of cotton. The most widely grown cotton variety is called Gossypium hirsutum and is grown in the United States, Brazil, Pakistan and Turkey.

Cotton generally consists of almost pure cellulose, a few percent wax, fat, natural dyes and water.

Advantages of cotton:

Cotton is a big part of our daily lives. We dry our faces with soft cotton towels, dress in cotton clothes, and in the evening we lie down under the covers. Cotton fabric is used in countless contexts, and it can be used for everything from jeans to shoelaces.

Properties

Cotton is a soft and comfortable material, which makes it an obvious choice to have close to the skin, for example, in t-shirts, underwear and socks. It is also good for mixing with other materials.

Cotton fabric can easily absorb various liquids. This makes the material perfect for dyeing. .

Considerations regarding cotton:

…that cotton is dependent on a number of chemicals and pesticides. Alternatively, you can choose the GOTS certification and get organic cotton.

Cotton cultivation is water-intensive.

Tips for washing cotton

Cotton opens up at high temperatures and therefore does best when washed at 95 degrees, so that the soapy water can rinse through the fibers and remove dirt in the cotton. Always read the washing instructions! The maximum temperature that each cotton item can withstand varies.

Cotton can withstand pressing, rolling, cleaning fluids and ironing at high temperatures - but not higher than 200 degrees.

Also be aware that colors fade when washed and wash creases can appear in the dye, so be prepared for cotton products to quickly get a casual "washed" look, which often makes the product cooler to look at.
